'The course was an eye-opener'

Nurse Glenn Bassig reflects on specialising in neurological rehabilitation

Glenn is a rehabilitation nurse based in Dublin. After spending time in the neurological rehabilitation field, he knew it was the one for him, and in 2021 successfully applied for a fully funded place on the UK’s first PGcert in Neurological Rehabilitation and Care. Now a course graduate, he reflects on his experience.

I’ve worked across different areas of nursing over the years, but neurological rehab is the one that has captured my interest. I’ve now specialised in this for almost three years. It’s such a fulfilment to see patients’ progress throughout the course of their rehabilitation.

By taking the remote-learning Neurological Rehabilitation and Care course at the University of Edinburgh I was able to learn about the different nursing theories and research principles in a structured way. I was also able to continue my professional practice in Dublin, giving me opportunities to apply what I was learning as I went.

Learning in an online environment was the greatest challenge for me when I started the programme, but as I went along, I never felt alone. The support from the academic team was exceptional which made the whole journey a smooth one. The course served as an eye-opener for me because it was so flexible; I found that I can manage to work and also study at the same time.

For me, the best thing about this whole programme is that I have met nursing colleagues and professors who I share the same passion with. I will definitely carry my learning and experience throughout my nursing career, and continue to broaden my knowledge in neurological rehabilitation.
